What is a good career for a man needing to get out of construction?
Asked by Ash
My husband has knee trouble from the construction work he does for a living. Does anyone have any good ideas for him as a new career option? He wants to start his own construction business, but we don't think we'll be able to get a loan for all the equipment he'll need. Does anybody have any advice for us?
Ok, I think he would be excellent at the 'construction manager' thing because he is a perfectionist and DOES NOT cut corners in his work.

I work in commercial real estate for a national retailer and I know that we have several 'construction managers' that work in the office. Maybe he can get a job like that where he still uses his construction background but has a desk job.

If you are located in a region where Hurricanes are an issue i would suggest getting into the Hurricane Shutter/ Generator sales. This season is suppose to be a big one! And Manufacturing and installing Accordion Hurricane shutters is not hard. It can be done with out much equipment. Another thought is to Strictly manufacture and sell shutters to other companies, that way you don't have to be directly involved with the buyer. Other than that, maybe he could be a city code inspector.

I wish I knew construction. If I did I would be a general contractor to build or remodel homes and develop land. You can still do very well buying run down homes in high income neighborhoods and flipping them for profit. If you don't have money for it team up with people who can get the funding and work out a deal so that you get 50% of the profit for building and they get 50% for finding the money. I'm on the funding side now but I really wish I had the experience in construction. Good Luck

Well wanting to start your own construction business when he needs to get out of it because of knee problems..well if he was the boss he'd still be working that knee keeping up with everything on the site and off. Consulting or Purchasing Manager for a large construction outfit might be okay as well but here's what I highly suggest.
Put the coffee or whatever on. Get a pad of paper and couple of pens. Sit down at the table or somewhere comfortable where you're relaxed, not tense.
Now make a list answering this question:
What do I LOVE to do? Make sure list includes everything from hobbies, avocations, recreational etc.
Why do I love doing this? for each item on list.
How do I prefer to do it? example some people drive on vacation while others take the train. Some want to supervise and others want to help build it etc
Where do I want/prefer to do it? Some enjoy a long commute while others enjoy working at or close to home.
And of course being a Truck Driver Recruiter, there's always professional driving, the automatics are easy on the knees lol
Hope the above list helps you and him find what HE is REALLy looking to do.
