How do I report an unregistered nurse, who is still practicing nursing. Im a patient who over heard it?
Asked by im lovin' the 2009
While I was visiting the doctor, I over heard this nurse saying she had not taken her recert for being a nurse. She then said it has been a year since her license has expired. I dont fell that she should still practice medicine. She is rather older, and I feel she may have forgot a couple of things. Will someone help me out?

I agree with Diane to a point. If she is wearing the title as an LPN or RN or calling herself a nurse or signing her name LPN or RN then she is breaking the law. I agree that you need to be careful, but it is also your right to report any complaints to your State Board of Nursing. Just type in the state name (and then) Board of Nursing into your search engine and you can get a phone number. Just call and tell them that you are not sure, but you think that there is a person who might be representing them self as a nurse and working without a license. You can then give them the name, title (such as RN or LPN) and location. It is their job to investigate. Normally it is as easy for them as looking on the computer and checking the name and city against current licenses. If there is no current license, they will send a local investigator, and have the authorities take care of the situation. You personally have no problem, as it would be no different than if you saw your neighbor walk into their house with two suitcases of bundles of money the day the bank was robbed and called a suspicion to the police.

Contact your "state board of nursing".

Be careful. Overheard conversations are often misread and unless she's really stupid she wouldn't be telling others anyway.

I agree about being careful with things you overhear. But you should be able to check online if someone is properly license. Go to your state's board of nursing website. If you know the name, you can input that and it will bring up if the nurse is currently licensed in that state. If she is not currently licensed and practicing nursing, that is a big concern.

Also, if she is in a private doc's office; the rules are a bit different so it depends on what she is doing. (just like medical assistants don't need to be licensed either, because you operate under the doc's supervision & license). If she is performing like a MA, she will not need a current license. The big decision point is on administration of certain medications. If you feel she is a danger then contact the board of nursing; but if all she is doing is vitals, putting into rooms, & assisting etc; then she doesn't need that license.
