Is this all for civil engineers?
Asked by neelesh_rauniyar
Barack Obama on Saturday outlined his plan to create 2.5 million jobs in coming years to rebuild roads and bridges and modernize schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.Does this mean that those new jobs are for civil engineers? what new jobs will be created?? anything in IT and computer sector??

Not many Civil Engineering jobs will be created, from what I have seen, this is just a stop gap bill for the infrastructure programs to fund projects that were already underway that were at risk of running out of money. The FDOT have been trying all year to get funding from Congress to cover the $200 Million shortfall in the Transportation budget for repairing roads and bridges on the Interstate system, so it will have little effect on providing new jobs in Civil Engineering. Civil Engineering depends on 3 sectors for work. The residential sector, commercial/industrial sector and the government sector. The residential sector has been dead for over a year and doesn't look like it will improve anytime soon. People are looking to the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010 for it to improve. But then again they also said a year ago that it would improve by the end of 2008 or the beginning of 2009. The commercial/industrial sector was limping along in 2008 but now it is dead and it doesn't look like it will come back for at least a year. Companies are not spending money to expand or build new infrastructure. Or they cannot get money to expand. That $700 Billion given to the banks to lend seemed to disappear into thin air. I doubt the taxpayers will see any of that money paid back. The governmental sector was the only thing keeping a lot of civil engineers in business in 2008 but since the $700 Billion bailout was given to the banks, a lot of funding for government project has dried up to pay for that $700 Billion bailout and other bailouts. You will see a lot of civil engineers lose their jobs and you will see a lot of civil engineering companies go out of business in the next couple of years. And it will take a long time before the industry recovers especially since they are not getting any help anywhere. My advice for those that are about to graduate this over the next year from a Civil engineering program is stay in school and get your masters degree or go look for jobs overseas or get into another field because getting a job in civil engineering in the next couple of years will be absolutely cutthroat.
