What kind of education is needed for a medical assistant?

So I thinking of becoming a medical assistant and am reading online but nothing says what kind of education i will need. Can I get a 2 year degree at a community college? or do i need something higher? Would I need to take courses as a nurse or what would the course title be? Thanks for any helpful answers! and do you think it is in demand or a job that is always needed. since the economy is the way it is i want to make sure i'm getting into something that i can actually find a job in. Thanks again!

I just finished going to school to be a medical assistant. I went to Prism Career Institute and the med assistant program took 9 months you can go to community college also but i think it takes a little longer. I personally think that there in high demand because my resume has been going out everywhere there are so many job opening i don't know which one to choose.
